On 7 November, it was no longer as hot as until 15 October, but still sunny and warm enough for a nude hike in the afternoon. The sun was dazzling during a rest at the dry Venner Moor. Even in the shade, the air was still pleasantly tempered, so that we could observe nature calmly and chat with mushroom pickers. Only the yachts in the Sendener Kanalhafen [en: Senden Channel Harbour] were lonely and unused, while several people used the beautiful Wednesday to move in fresh air on foot or by bike.

Midsummery days of up to 29°C on 15 October prompted some naturists, to use the golden autumn for nude hikes or biking tours. So did R., who encountered at the weekend hundreds of weekend promenaders in the area of the Dortmund-Ems Kanal and Venner Moor – Münsterland.
One of them reported about his encounter with the nude hiker to the Münster daily newspaper Westfälische Nachrichten, who – after consulting police officers – published an informative article “Freie Körperkultur im Venner Moor, ‘Nacktwandern ist keine Belästigung’”*) (wn.de) for the readers.
*) Explanatory notes from the translator regarding this article in the daily newspaper:
- The German title “Freie Körperkultur im Venner Moor, ‘Nacktwandern ist keine Belästigung’” can be translated to: “Naturism in Venne Moor, ‘Hiking in the buff is not a nuisance’”.
Background information: Disturbance of the public.
- The article explains, that a journalist has contacted a spokesman of the police in Münster (Westf.) as well as a managing officer of the 'Citizen service and order' of the town-hall in the nearby city of Senden. The bottom line of the information stated in this article is, that hiking in the buff is neither a criminal, nor – in general – a regulatory offence in Germany.

► “NEWT 2018: a week-long nude hiking on the Tyrolean Alps
Having been to NEWT every year since my first participation in 2016, this third NEWT of mine was a lovely time of meeting old friends and making new ones. There is an enchanting attraction in Alpine hiking that is quite indescribable and makes it irresistible for hikers to return each year almost religiously but while the views are always stunning and breathtaking, one must not forget that the mountains are untamed and can at times be quite unforgiving. Having slipped and fallen on a cattle grid last year which resulted in a badly bruised knee, I was determined this year to be much more careful and sure enough, everything went on smoothly. […]
It was a lovely sunny day and we hiked up to Ahornstein. On our way, we came across quite a few non-naturist hikers with whom we exchanged greetings and pleasantries. There were horses too which, to a selfie-addict like me, were nothing less than an invitation to take more photos. […]
All the hiking left us pretty much hungry and thirsty and it was such a joy when we stumbled upon a tavern called Konigsbergalm 1300. This was the same place we stopped at in NEWT 2016. The owner was perfectly naturist-friendly and a handful of guests he had at his pub were very friendly. It’s moments like this that make me regret not knowing how to converse in German. Before we left, the owner and staff asked if we minded having a group photo taken at his pub. We were more than delighted to oblige. […]”

► “Saxony Active Naturist Week 2018
This was the first time I participated in the Saxony event. Previously, although I had heard of it, I was under the impression that it was an exclusively German affair. After all, the international participants of NEWT did not go to Saxony after NEWT. But last year, John (of Dublin) and I discussed the prospect of attending this event this year and the thought that there would at least be one non German-speaking Irishman somehow emboldened me. And boy, am I glad I went!
First, many of the participants of the Saxony event were people I already knew and had met in the previous NEWT events. Even those who were new to me were friendly and warm as all naturists tend to be. There were people from other countries too, and at least two other persons (quite apart from John and me) who did not speak German. It may not have as large an international community as NEWT but it’s getting there. And the activities are incredibly enjoyable and varied. After the gruelling hiking at NEWT which exhausted me quite a bit, I was relieved to see that the Saxony hiking wasn’t so strenuous. The area is a huge national park with unique rock formations and the hike involved a lot of climbing up ladders, steps and rocks and squeezing through crevices in rocks and going into labyrinths of tunnels and meandering paths that nature has blessed this area with. It’s for me very much like the Disneyland of nude hiking. Apart from hiking, we went boating in the river and yes, we cycled for 40 km into the Czech Republic and we cycled the same distance back, all by the Elbe River. […]
The international crowd from NEWT should also attend the Saxony activities just as the Saxony folks should attend NEWT. If you get to know people better, you will find that there is so much you can talk about with people who speak a different language. I spent many a pleasant hour discussing English grammar with Horst and Rainer – something I could never do with English-speaking people who universally don’t know much about grammar. There’s something truly amazing about the German people that made me decide to learn the German tongue but sadly, I just gave it up after my first lesson. Some things are just impossible. Hope to see everyone again next year!”

► “SAXONY ACTIVE NATURIST WEEK, impressions of a visitor
This was my first time to hike in the Saxon Switzerland landscape. It is a most attractive national park. The river Elbe adds to the attractions of the hiking areas. We were never far from the river which looked very benign in the pleasant summer conditions. We know, of course, that it can be very menacing in flood conditions.
The hiking was of a good standard, fairly strenuous in the summer heat, but not as difficult as at NEWT. Naturism seemed to be acceptable almost everywhere, and yet the only naturists I saw were the members of our own group. Most clothed hikers, cyclists, ice cream vendors, etc, seemed to regard us as not exceptional.
Hiking through the caves and on the vertical ladders were a new and, at first, a somewhat frightening experience for me …”

► “NEWT 2018, a week of naturist Alpine hiking, impressions of a visitor
Alpine hiking, clothed or naked, is very strenuous because of the ascent and descent in mountainous terrain. Non hikers do not appreciate how difficult coming downhill can be. The ground is uneven and the hikers generally tired. Most hiking accidents occur coming downhill. When hiking naked more of the body is exposed to possible injury. Being careful is essential.
NEWT 2018 was just as difficult as NEWT 2017 …”

► Sat 8: Warm-up hike near Lintel in the northern Münsterland [9 September 2018]
As a warm-up for the Westphalian Naturist Days, 15 participants hiked 15 km in the nude. The sky was mostly cloudy, made way for a sunbeam every now and then. The storm loss caused by storm front Friederike, which was well known from a hike in April, were removed in the meantime except for some climbing obstacles. Shortly before the end of the hike we could swim in the warm water of a forest lake, get rid of dust and sweat, before we went to the restaurant Parkhotel Nordwalde for dinner.
One of the participants hiked with us for her first time and stayed dressed, after her husband had told her, that whoever does not want, of course, does not have to undress, but is still welcome. She liked the tour so much among all the nude people, that she wants to repeat.

► Sun 9 Sep: Sunday hike in the northeastern Münsterland, optional swimming along the Ems River [10 September 2018]
The temperature rose up to 23°C, 5°C above yesterday's maximum. Right from the beginning, the 15 nude hikers could enjoy bright sunshine. So, some of us opted to replace a part of the 20 km hike by distance swimming in the Ems River. Also, a bath in the Dortmund-Ems Canal was available.
A woman, who was walking her dog at the Ems, asked many curious questions about the hobby of hiking in the buff. She gladly accepted our informational brochure to read more about that.

► Mon 10: Hiking of 22 km around the Dortmund-Ems Canal or biking of 41 km [10 September 2018]
14 naturists gathered. 11 opted for a bike tour, although the temperature did not rose above 18 °C in the morning and evwn later, the airstream at 21 °C cooled down the bikers significantly. The two long-distance hikers enjoyed the special situation, where they could speed up as they could. The third hiker opted for a shorter hike.
At the evening, bikers and hikers gathered for a refreshment at the restaurant Zum neuen Herd.
► Tue 11: Meadows at the Ems River near Telgte – 20 km of hiking or 50 km of biking [11 September 2018]
We gathered directly at the Ems River. 7 hikers, two women and five man, and an American Collie stayed near the river: They hiked along renatured meadows at the Ems River in the Warendorf district. In the course of the day, the weather turned into a real summer day with 25 °C and lots of sunshine. Their hike of 20 km took place completely in the meadows at the river. Several times, you could take a refreshing bath. The bikers, due to a distance of 50 km, also drove through surrounding fields, meadows, and small forests. We enjoyed to be warmed by the sun, because although the thermometer already showed 20 °C at the start time, the wind blew unpleasantly violently. Soon, however, the sun had accomplished its work: Air temperature rose to 25°C, so that we did no longer perceive the strong breeze as cold.
For the first rest, the biking and hiking groups met on a piece of meadow in the sunshine. Afterwards, we followed different paths anew. Finally together again, we enjoyed the end of the day at the restaurant Alter Gasthof Seiling in Telgte having hearty, local dishes.

► Wed 12: Ems Meadows near Warendorf – Hiking into a cold front [12 September 2018]
Sporadic sunshine and an air temperature of 21 °C invited the 11 naturists to hike 15 km through the Emsauen towards Warendorf. Farmsteads with countless paddocks and alternating fields lay along our path, but also nature trails along the Ems and Hessel rivers offered numerous opportunities for nature studies. At the find spot of the Neandertal Man at Neuwarendorf at Kottrup Lakes, we had a rest break, where a parked car served as a food and beverage station for the group. Here, we could use a table with benches – as built especially for us.
After the lunch break, we went back downstream along the river Ems. An announced cold front, which had arrived in the meantime, became noticable with strong adverse winds and sinking temperatures. So, it was good to be able to dive into the ind shadow within a small forest several times. Back at the parking lot, the thermometer showed 16.8 °C: Time for a hot coffee.

► Thu 13: Hiking 17 km through the drinking water production area Hohe Ward [14 September 2018]
Due to a dense blanket of clouds, wind and 14°C, the 10 naturists started clothed. During the hike, it got better and, little by little, we reached our personal sense of well-being, so that we got rid of our clothes, before they were in danger of absorbing sweat.
It became even warmer (up to 19°C at the end of the hike) and sunnier, so that the participants had a successful hiking day. At the end of the day, we enjoyed a wide range of food and drinks and an amiable service in the hotel and restaurant Zur Prinzenbrücke.
► Fri 14: To the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Venner Moor near Senden [14 September 2018]
16 hikers had gathered at the start-parking lot and were pleased about bright sunshine and blue sky. Warming rays made us completely forget, that the air temperature was only 17 to 18°C in the morning, but exceeded 20°C after lunch. After 3 km, another naturist joined the group. The total distance of 18 km was too long for him and he had planned his 10 km short hike in such a way, that he could hike the highlights Dortmund-Ems Canal and Venne Moor with the group.
At the Dortmund-Ems Canal, our group encountered a biking naturist, who could not make in time to the starting place: He undressed, joined the group – and left his bike attached to a fence. At the end of the sunny hike, we were tempted to have a stop for refreshment in the restaurant Gasthaus Eickholt in Davensberg. Mmmh, delicious!

► Sat 15: Skittles, morning pint, mountain hike, check construction progress [15 September 2018]
After nude breakfast buffet and skittles in the restaurant Zum neuen Herd near Nordwalde, we enjoyed nature in the Bockholter Berge [en: Bockholt Mountains] during a short hike of approx. 10 km and then toured the construction site at the bridge, that leads the Dortmund-Ems Canal over the Ems River. The construction progress compared to our visit at the end of April was clear.

► Sun 16: Sun, hike, optionally wade a creek, or bike [16 September 2018]
On the final Sunday of the WNT 2018, we could enjoy sunshine and temperatures up 24°C. 24 participants splitted into groups of 13 bikers und 11 hikers. As part of the 15 km hiking trail, the hikers had the option to wade a creek. Those, who did not want to take advantage of this refreshment or were afraid of wet feet, could alternatively continue their hike on dry paths with a short detour.
The bikers did a circuit of 49 km through the Dülmener Münsterland. For lunch, both groups met again at the rest break, for which a car was parked near the enclosure of the Dülmener Wildpferde [en: Dülmen Ponies]. Afterwards, we went again on different paths until the return to the start-parking lot. Then, the restaurant Haus Waldfrieden fulfilled all wishes regarding coffee and cake, ice cream, cold drinks and hot meals. Finally, participants thanked the intiators, Mic and Rainer, and then bid farewell – until the next WNT at the latest.

Hint: Videos about cycling in the nude during WNT 2018
Sächsische Nacktwander-Woche (SNW) [en: Week of Nude Hikes in Saxon Switzerland] attracted naturists from several parts of Germany as well as from some other countries in 2018. It took place from 4 to 12 August.
► Sat 4 Aug: Hike in the nude to the Gohrisch and the Papststein [5 August 2018]
The Gohrisch (falsely also Gohrischstein) is located about four kilometres southeast of Königstein in the middle of a plateau called Ebenheit, which is still dominated by further rocky mountains. Surrounding mountains are Papststein [en: Pope's Stone], Kleinhennersdorfer Stein [en: Kleinhennersdorf Stone] and the Lasensteine. At the foot of the Gohrisch, there are the small towns Gohrisch (same name as one of the stones) and Papstdorf, which belong to the municipality of Gohrisch. On the eastern side, there is the Specksteinstollen [en: Soapstone Gallery], a witness of earlier mining experiments. In the immediate vicinity, there is a small, overgrown quarry, in which basalt was mined as road gravel.
As early as 1780, Papststein was opened up by a path (Alter Weg [en: Old Path]), which, however, is no longer accessible today. The gorge on the eastern climb was made accessible in 1845. In 1858, a wooden pavilion was erected on the summit, then in 1862 a mountain inn, which still exists today.
A team of British TV station ITV accompanied a group of nude hikers. Thus, the approach of hiking in the buff is also becoming more widespread internationally.
► Sun 5 Aug: Bernhardstein and Labyrinth - Highlights near Bielatal Valley [5 August 2018]
“I have rarely been so enthusiastic about a panorama of a relatively unknown mountain in Saxon Switzerland, as I was about the Bernhardstein. The mountain of a height of 424 m above sea level, formerly known as Kegelstein, got its name from a Hermsdorf manor owner, who promoted the touristic development of the mountain. After its development, the mountain became a popular look-out into the Bielatal Valley and into the ‘world of stones’.”
– Translated cit. by “Matthias, the Saxon, who explores here everything.”
► Tue 7 Aug: Hike at Hockstein or ride an inflatable boat on the Elbe River [7 August 2018]
On Tuesday, we had the choice between a hike in the nude or to ride an inflatable boat on the Elbe. 10 naturists rode the boat from Königstein to Pirna. In between, we took a rest near the ferry at the town Kurort Rathen [en: Spa Town Rathen], to refresh ourselves in the nude together with textile-wearing people – mostly families – by licking icecream or drinking cool buttermilk-elderberry beverages.
17 participants opted for a classical hike in the nude, which we started at a car park near the Hockstein. Later, we had a impressive look-out to Hohnstein Castle. The following descent led over ladders worked adventurously into narrow stone gaps. Due to the sunshine, the temperature went up to over 30°C, only in the caves and the Gautschhöhle [en: Gautsch Grotto], the air was clearly cooler. In the beer garden at Waltersdorfer Mühle [en: Waltersdorf Mill], we could rest in the buff to enjoy coffee, ice, sausages, and beer. Other dressed guests were very interested in our way of hiking and started detailed conversations. Finally we went up the Polenztal Valley and arrived after a difficult final climb at the Hockstein.
► Wed 8 Aug: Hiking near Radebeul or on the Hoher Schneeberg [10 August 2018]
As an alternative, Helmut “natury” chose a short hike of a length of 5.5 km – but with 200 m ascent on a 2 km track – with the goal of the Hundewand near Hoher Schneeberg in Bohemian Switzerland, from where a broad panorama view into the valley of the Elbe and the city of Decin was available. At the inn at the look-out tower, he had an ice cream and Viennese coffee.
► Thu 9 Aug: Schrammsteine and Breite Kluft – Shadow in the forest before arrival of a cold front [10 August 2018]
28 Participants first descended from Ostrau to the Zahnsgrund [en: Bottom of the Tooth], where the wetness of the previous evening's rain remained in the foggy air, which made the ascent to the Schrammtor extremely sweaty. On top of the Schrammsteine [en: Scratchy Stones], meanwhile a light, dry wind blew again, which quickly made forget the strain of the ascent.
Once again, the temperate went up to 34°C, so that everyone was glad, that the way led us predominantly through half shade of the forest. Nevertheless, we enjoyed further look-outs like at the Breite Kluft [en: Wide Gap]. We splitted into two groups: A fast group, because they had to pick up a repaired car at a garage in the afternoon before close of business, and a slow group without such time constraints.
► Sun 12 Aug: From Kirnitzschtal Valley to Affensteine and Carolafelsen [12 August 2018]
A young couple took the opportunity, to hike in clothes with us and to get an idea of our community. While he had to return early, she accompanied us until the end of the hike and told us, that she enjoyed it so much, that she would like to accompany us again.
Shortly before our return to the Kirnitzsch Creek, another young couple showed interest in nude hiking and our naturist lifestyle. The conversation soon changed from German to English, when it became clear, that she understood English better. They accompanied us to our bathing place. Both did not hesitate long to our invitation from the water “Come in. It is refreshing.”: They undressed and came into the Kirnitzsch. She answered the question “Where are you from?” with “Columbia, Bogotá.” Her friend from Hanover, where both now live, had met her during his studies in Spain. She is now learning German as her next language.
In 2018, NEWT (short for: Naked European Walking Tour) took place from 29 July to 2 August.
► Sun 29 Jul: Warm-up hike to the Ahornstein [29 July 2018]
46 Naturists from USA, Ireland, England, the Nederlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Slovakia, and Singapore gathered for the week of nude hikes in the Austrian Alps. Ten of them made use of tents (backpacking trips lasting two days each), the others return daily to the base of the rented holiday home.
A school girl and her father from Westphalia, who had completed their first nude hike last week in Thuringia, have taken so much pleasure in nude mountain hiking, that the two now also participate in the NEWT.
The warm-up hike on Sunday went to the Ahornstein (1,855 m), where we made the official NEWT photo with view onto the Hochkönig (2,941 m) in the Tauern Mountains. Lim then sent a group photo of the rest at the alp to natury. Many thanks for that!
► Mon 30 Jul: To the bottom of the Torsäule [30 July 2018]
According to FIFA rules, the goalpost is 2.44 m high. Its big sister, the Austrian mountain Torsäule [en: Goalpost], is much higher: 500 m. It is a very steep limestone formation on the eastern flank of the Hochkönig in the Berchtesgarden Alps. The summit is 2,588 m above sea level – but the naturists did not want to climb this far, as the last 500 m rise almost vertically and can only be climbed with at least level 8. Their target was at the foot of the limestone column, where a huge amount of crumbled stones had accumulated. For this, too, a total of 800 height meters (hiking) had to be overcome.
► Tue 31 Jul: Once on the Hochkeil [31 July 2018]
After yesterday's 800 m it should be a bit more relaxed today: only 600 m ascent to the summit of the Hochkeil were on the agenda. The mountain, which gave the name to the surrounding family ski area, leaves the imposing panorama of the Mandlwände [en: Mandl Walls] always in view, and the Hochkönigsstock as a meteorological divide ensures safe snow conditions and stable weather suitable for holidays.
After 14 km at 31°C, 30 naturists finished their day trip as minimally dressed guests on the alp. On the subject of naturist hiking, the landlords as well as other guests were able to talk to them personally and to inform themselves by means of our brochure. So far, they only knew that by hearsay.
► Wed 1 Aug: Via the Marathon Trail to the Jagglalm [1 August 2018]
Anyone, who sets off on a marathon route in the mountains, has to reckon with inclinations. If you want to win the “Hochkönig Man” race, you should keep your running pace – not like the hikers in the nude, some of whom leaned on walking sticks!
After 610 m difference in altitude and 7 km distance, we took our midday's rest at the Jagglalm. The bare mountain slopes all around showed the traces of the winter sports business in the "family ski area".
► Thu 2 Aug: Short trip to the alpine shower facility [2 August 2018]
In view of a rather long hiking day yesterday and a thunderstorm to be expected this afternoon, we only made a short hike to the waterfall, which we had already visited the day before yesterday. We didn't have to sweat today at 20°C, closed cloud cover and weak wind.
The schoolgirl and her father from Westphalia had, like many of us, a lot of fun at the waterfall and in the natural bathtubs. On Tue 31 Jul, when we were there already, the two had taken a day off.
In view of a rather long hiking day yesterday and an expected thunderstorm this afternoon, we only made a short hike to the waterfall, which we had already visited the day before yesterday. We didn't have to sweat today at 20°C, closed cloud cover and light wind. On the path, we discoverved a saga: “SAGENWEG: DER VERLORENE BROTLAIB” [en: “PATH OF SAGAS: THE LOST LOAF OF BREAD”]
After that, we split up: Some continued the hike. The tent group went back. Some had decided to spend the afternoon in the ALPENTHERME GASTEIN [en: ALPS SPA GASTEIN]. There, they enjoyed the pleasure of bathing, sat in dry saunas or outside in a hot whirlpool with their heads in cooling rain. Others also returned, experienced an opening cloud cover, increasing sunshine and enjoyed again food and beverages at the same mountain alp minimally dressed as on 31 July.
Some of the English naturists visited the town of Bischofshofen and witnessed bicycle races for children, adults, music, and dance. They bought for money, which we had collected before by asking group members for a voluntarily donation, very nice, personal little gifts. In the evening, when we sat together after the jointly prepared and consumed dinner, they presented the gifts to the initiators to say thank you for the voluntary, labor-intensive preparation and the time experienced together.
Since four of us from Germany, Ireland, and Singapore go to Saxon Switzerland on Friday after breakfast to participate in the nudevents over there, Allan (England) and Antonis (Greece) have announced, to send pictures of the last hike of NEWT 2018 to natury.
We would like to thank the iniators (France), who made this time together possible for the second time in place of Richard Foley, and the longtime leader of the tent group (Netherlands). The latter has learned original Indonesian cuisine from his Indonesian-born mother and coddles us with it one evening at each NEWT. We look forward to an international reunion by 2019 at the latest.

Michael, since some time recurrently being initiator of nude hikes in the Eifel Mountains, had invited to a hike near Blankenheim. Here's his report:
Extreme heat during the days before was temporarily replaced by a less hotter phase, but still quit warm with temperature between 24°C at the start of the hike and up to 28°C later on. 22 naturists had followed the call and hiked mainly through meadows with wide panoramic views into the country, whereby the wooded slopes of the Ahr valley formed the green horizon line – in strong contrast to the yellow of the desiccated meadows. The hike was 14 km long and ended with a stop at the Evert Beer Garden.
In 2018, the Thüringer Naturisten-Tage (TNT) [en: Naturist Days in Thuringia] took place from 14 to 26 July.
► Sat 14 July: First hike in the nude through the gorges below Wartburg Castle [14 July 2018]
The first hike of the TNT led in bright summer weather through some gorges below the Wartburg. 28 participants came together to hike through the accumulated 350 m of altitude.
Their path led them through Landgrafenschlucht [en: Gorges of the Landgraves], the Ludwigsklamm [en: Ludwig's Gorge} and the Dornheckenweg Path, but in between also over a height with a view of the world cultural heritage.
After the hike we went to the mountain restaurant Kleiner Hörselberg for refreshment. In past times, when the A4 still led along there, this was a motorway service area.

► Sun 15 July: 38 naturists hike and bathe in the nude at the Hohenwarte Dam [15 July 2018]
The Sunday was also a warm sunny day, so that the varied path in the vicinity of the dam with shade on forest roads and an clear view of the sunny countryside was suitably chosen. The shy dormouses, who have long since established a homey home for a long time in the Mooshäuschen [en: Moss Cot], showed up sprightly and merryly. From the viewpoint, we had a wide view from the meandering turns of the lake to the wooded peaks of the surrounding mountains.
An imaginative floral decoration on a house wall attracted attention, and finally the hikers also found a place on the lake shore that invited them to take a refreshing bath. Not only for the globetrotters raised in South Africa resp. the Netherlands, who had already hiked with us in 2017, and the guests from Italy, it was a happy and eventful day.

► Mon 16 July: Above the roofs of the city of Jena – Hiking on the Saale-Horizontale Track [16 July 2018]
The Saale-Horizontale is a 72 km long quality hiking trail on the western and eastern slopes of the Saale River with typical samples of shell limestone. The hike offered constantly varying landscape and lots of views of the city of Jena and the river valley with castles and castle ruins. The 30 naturists hiked in the buff at the edge of Jena on the track close to the city. They had to ascend at the southern end of Jena in order to descend again after numerous turns of the path in the north of the city. A journalist, who writes for the regional daily newspaper “Freies Wort” in Suhl, South Thuringia, and two photographers, who were looking for motif for the German naturist orgaanisation DFK and for a photo book, accompanied the group.
We finished the hike – like in 2016 – at Zum Ziegenhainer. The restaurant's landlord remembered well, that he offered us to dine nude in his beer garden. This time, he asked us to stay dressed, because another group had reserved.
The second group then cancelled by phone, and so again the refreshment could be taken nude in the beer garden. For some residents and passing hikers the fun was obviously already very big when watching!

► Tue 17 July: Close to and within – Hohenwarte Dam from above and from below [17 July 2018]
The hike at the Hohenwarte Dam was the most challeging one due to a length of 19 km and an accumulated difference in altitude of 430 m. The efforts of the ascent and descent were rewarded by numerous views such as from the hang glider airfield at the Hohenleite Dam. The floods of the dam also invited to cool down – an opportunity, that most of the 26 hikers were looking forward because of the warm summer weather.
We finished the hike with a visit of the restaurant Zur Krone in Altenbeuthen, where the landlord served traditional Thuringian style dishes.

► Wed 18 July: Enjoy the day on bike or on foot [18 July 2018]
On Wednesday, 20180718 Ten naturists hiking in the buff through the forestsome participants of the Thüringer Naturisten-Tage biked nude near Bad Klosterlausnitz. Afterwards, a visit to Kristall-Therme Spa was on schedule.
Some naturists opted for a hike in the buff: A photo album "10 nude hikers in the Thuringia Forest" reports their tour.

► Thu 19 July: Hike in the buff near Burgk Castle [19 July 2018]
North of the Bleiloch Dam, there is the Burgkhammer Dam, and continuing the Walsburg Dam. There, the Saale turns into a normal river again. High above, Burgk Castle is enthroned. Behind a rather simple façade, there are rooms with magnificent and valuable interiors. Hiking in this area means turning your gaze in the direction of the striking castle every now and then – unless small details in the forest, on the side of the path or in the water of the dam attract attention.
40 naturists from France, Germany, Italy, and Luxembourg including the two globetrotters finished the day with perfect summer weather with an ascent onto the Saale Tower and a dinner on the historical restaurant Schlossterasse [en: Castle Terrace] – also the name of a restaurant nearby.

► Fri 20 July: Nude paddling day – canoeing on the Hohenwarte Dam [21 July2018]
About 30°C air temperature and only a few clouds were the pleasant conditions – but this caused also a challenge for the water sports fans with regard to sun protection. To cool down, they could spray each other with water or jump into the floods occasionally. Since not everyone is able to climb back into the canoe on the high seas, however, most of the sudden falls into the water took place close to the shore.

► Sat 21 July: Hike at the Bleiloch Dam near Ebersdorf [21 July2018]
At the weekend, even more friends of the naturist hiking arrived at the TNT: 48 participated on Saturday, one of them from Belgium expanded the list of countries even further. A family from Lower Saxony with 16 year old daughter had already participated in the fun of canoing on Friday and hiked now 14 km via the Zoppotener Mühle [en: Zoppoten Mill] und the Heinrichstein. It is likely that the name Heinrichstein refers to the Lords of Reuß, who since the 12th century were all called Heinrich. In any case, the view was worth a visit even before the Saale pondage.
The Bleiloch Dam offered well appreciated opportunities to bathe. The perfect day ended with a barbecue in the restaurant Zur Krone in Ebersdorf.

► Sun 22 July: Hike at the Hohenwarte Dam [22 July 2018]
The track with a length of 17.5 km and 570 cumulative meters of difference in altitude was one of TNT's more challenging hikes. For some participants, it was quite convenient, that the sun beams could pass through the atmosphere completely unhindered.
We went to the upper basin, which is pumped full with water from the dam in order to be able to connect additional power plant capacity at times of increased electricity demand. Although pumping up costs more electricity than can be generated afterwards by the water falling down again, the effort is worthwhile because the connection of other peak capacities is much slower (e.g. because of the heating up) and more expensive (because of the amortization costs and the lower power efficiency).

► Mon 23 July: Hike in the buff at the eastern part of the Hohenwarte Dam [23 July 2018]
From Ziegenrück, 25 volunteers started steeply uphill. The destination was the Teufelskanzel [en: Devil's Pulpit], a rock formation on the northern shore of the lake, from which several vantage points open the view of the picturesque Saale arch. Due to the warm summer weather, a cooling bath after descent to the lake shore was a pleasant refreshment. After that, the sweat was running anew, because we went uphill again. The passage over a viaduct of a shut-down railway was still on the agenda. So, we went over a creek burbling (only moderately because of the drought caused by the climate change). Then, we continued through the pleasantly cool darkness of the Hemmkoppen Tunnel. In the past, the trains had to switch on the lights to find their way. For the hiking group, 3 flashlights were enough.
In the restaurant Zur Fernmühle, there is – beside the he-goat – once per hour (more exactly: 3 minutes before the clock hour) a dance of the goats (video) shown – instead of a cuckoo clock a goats' bleating clock.

► Tue 24 July: Hiking near Bad Klosternauslitz and relaxation at the spa [24 July 2018]
Today, the hikers explored the Holzland [en: Woodland], where the biking in the nude already took place last Wednesday. Among the 24 participants, there was also a Westphalian schoolgirl, who went on her first hike in the buff with her father. She was happy about the international community of naturists: So, she could immediately put her school English to the test. After a walk around the Roter Pfützensumpf [en: Red Puddle Swamp], which was not swampy at all, the way led further into the Mühltal [en: Mill Valley] to various historical mills, which were driven for centuries by the water of the Rauda Creek. At the Meuschkenmühle, they are preparing for the festival of strong men.
At 31 °C air temperature, the hikers walked the way from the parking lot to the ticket office in the Kristalltherme Bad Klosternauslitz in the buff – why should you cover up to pay, when you are nude apart from that all day? Then, we enjoyed the desired increase in heat of the sauna and a well cooled salad in the spa restaurant as refreshment.

► Wed 25 July: Nude through Uhlstädt Heath [25 July 2018]
At Zeutsch, 21 hikers arrived at nearly 30°C, later the air temperature rose to 33°C. We started from the car park aside the railway station for a circuit first to a ruin of a church in the forest near Töpfersdorf. An association Natur und Umwelt [en: Nature and Environment] is missing subsidies for conservation. Already in 1980, active inhabitants of Saalleiten created a nature trail, which they revitalised and redesigned since 2013 as Entdeckerpfad [en: Explorers' Track]. Today, interactive map and geocaching are addtional means to attract people.
At the end of the day there was a stop at the restaurant Sonnenhof in Herschdorf on the edge of the Uhlstädt Heath.

► Thu 26 July: Hike in between the Plothener Teiche [26 July 2018]
The Land of 1000 Ponds near near Plothen is, above all, quite flat: Only 80 m of cumulated difference in altitude had to be climbed during the day. There was a lot to learn: over a pile dwelling at least 300 years old, on a neighbouring nature trail or in the Brehm Museum in Renthendorf.
Jürgen of the FSV Rother Hiehl Association, after reading about the Naturist Days in regional newspaper Ostthüringer Zeitung [en: East Thuringian Newspaper], had invited the hikers in the buff to the association's naturist area – which they of course gladly accepted.
At the end of the last TNT hiking day in 2018, 17 of the naturists stopped at the restaurant Zum Plothenteich in Plothen. We thanked Andreas for the wonderful time and look forward to a reunion with well-known naturists or getting to know other naturists e.g. at the NEWT in Austria, in Saxony, in Westphalia or at the latest in 2019.

D · “Nackedei 3” will be published in 2019 – Norbert Sander collects new impressions at the TNT [17 July 2018]
Norbert Sander, publisher of photo books “Nackedei” and “Nackedei 2”, plans a 3rd volume of his series of books. In search of new ideas and motives, he participated in the TNT hike on Monday on the “Saale-Horizontale”. Here is an excerpt from text and pictures, which Norbert made available to us in advance:
Some people, who looked on Monday from the city of Jena to Kernberge Mountains, nearly did not trust own eyes: Obviously, a group of nude people was moving high above the roofs of Jena on the Saale-Horizontale. Anyone, who thought that was a mirage at the high temperatures, had to understand with a second look the latest, that that was not the case: Yes, actually 31 nude ramblers moved from Radis in the direction to Ziegenhain. The Jena photographer Norbert Sander, publisher of a series of books called “Nackedei”, accompanied the hikers and caught some impressions. They should find their place in the 3rd book of the “Nackedei” series in 2019.
Although men were clearly in the majority, there were also some women. Andreas from the vicinity of Rudolstadt has been initiated the “Thüringer Naturistentage”, which are becoming more and more popular. “There is a base of fans participating regularly. Many plan this very definitely for their holidays.” For example Rita and Dieter from Schmalkalden, who participate almost the whole week. There are such beautiful spots on the doorstep, you don't even have to go far away. This is the tenor of many participants. Nevertheless, naturist hikers from all parts of Germany also take part. They come from Rhineland, Palatinate, Bavaria, and Saarland. And above all from Saxony. There, the “Saxon Nude Hiking Days” will take place at the beginning of August. Participants from England and France also appreciate the nude community.
This year's hikes take place from 14 to 26 July. The routes are mainly completed in the Saale Valley Dam region, in the Thuringian Forest and near Bad Klosterlausnitz. On 18 July, there will be a cycle tour and on 20 July a canoe tour on the Hohenwarte Dam. There is also a central accommodation for those, who take part in several hikes.

Günter has send us a participant's report about a nude hike in Wahner Heide [en: Wahn Heath]:
We had the feeling to have done everything right, because the weather turned out to be the most beautiful on the way to the meeting point near Rösrath. But at 12:30 pm, half an hour before the meeting, it became overcast rapidly. But only to give way to sunshine at 1 pm precisely. The few remaining clouds made sure that it got pleasantly warm, but without bright sunshine. A very happy omen.
Twelve participants – 8 men, 4 women – had enrolled. They met at the starting point without any issues. “Clothing away and let's enter the heath!” was then our motto at aprox. 1 pm.
First we went, past large areas with lush yellow flowering broom, from the parking lot named Busenberg via a place called Brand a path slightly downhill towards Geisterbusch and from there via the November to the Herfeld. Unfortunately, the water buffalos were not on the pasture at Geisterbusch, but I was sure, that we would see them later.
At Herfeld, I decided to direct our nude hike to the left first to make a big right turn. So, we could enjoy the pleasant temperatures, take a look at the runway of the Cologne / Bonn Airport every now and then, and discover a few highlights of the Wahn Heath: I.a. the only woodland sage (Salvia nemorosa, Salvia sylvestris) far and wide – at least 50 square kilometres – the blooming cotton grass (Eriophorum), the first visible sundews (Drosera), a royal fern (Osmunda), wild thyme (Thymus), wild yellow irises etc. We saw a kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), while croaking of frogs accompanied us.
Once at the top, we met a larger group of nordic walkers group, who were just warming up …

Ravensburg State Forest
Weather turbulences at Father's Day and at Mother's Day also offered sunshine and bright sky and daytime temperatures of up to 25°C.
A long-planned trip to southeastern Swabia, therefore found its intended fulfilment for visiting naturists with a nude hike starting from the Waldburg [en: Forest Castle]: numerous views with Ravensburg State Forest as an impressive backdrop.
WNT initiators Mic and Rainer made use of the extended weekend from 28 Apr to 1 May (Sat to Tue) to begin the naturist season 2018, as in 2017. Although the high midsummer temperatures of mid-April had given way to normal air temperatures again, there was still an opportunity, to try out how refreshing a swim in a lake or the Ems River currently is, when you hike or bike. Of course, Julia, our photographer of naturist life, was also present again.
The hike and bike tour planned for May Day (bank holiday in Germany) were cancelled as a precaution due to the predicted maximum temperatures of 11 °C and gusts of up to 75 km/h.
► Sat 28: Breakfast buffet and skittles followed by a short hike [30 April 2018]
With a nude morning pint regulars' table, an ample breakfast buffet, and skittles for a total of 5 hours, 20 naturists started these naturist days towards the beginning of May. Ms and Mr Echterhoff had again proven skills of their kitchen at their restaurant ‘Zum Neuen Herd’. In fact, a partial delivery of the ordered sunshine was actually given from time to time, so that some continued their conversations in the garden of the restaurant. Afterwards, the participants explored the progress of the construction work at the bridge that leads the Dortmund-Ems Canal over the Ems River.

► Sun 29: Hiking and biking [30 April 2018]
Sunday offered the warmest temperatures of the naturist days with temperatures of up to 22°C, which, however, felt together with the airstream cool when biking. 5 nude bikers also needed a certain start-up time, until they got bright sunshine onto their bodies. The circuit through the Münster parkland had a length of 50 km.
Without headwind, 8 hikers could enjoy the friendly spring weather faster, so that the group managed its 15 km circuit under best conditions. After approx. 9 km, the hiking group arrived at a depot car for a break.
They had a nice experience crossing country road L592 near restaurant Lintels Kotten: Half of the hikers in the buff had just crossed the country road, when the others had to wait because of a vehicle approaching. It was a police patrol car. The officers drove on without taking any interest in us. Hiking in the buff is meanwhile so normal, commonplace, and well known.
The warning “Friederike obstructs nude hikes” by natury on 15 April 2018 became unexpectedly topical: The naturists had to overcome some fallen trees, that storm Friederike had thrown onto the track – the hikers at the beginning and at the end, the bikers fortunately only at the end of their tour. Climbing over fallen trees and, at the same time, even hoisting an e-bike over the bulky and pricking obstacle was only possible with a joint effort. Thanks for the help!
For the final dinner, hikers and bikers met again in the restaurant Lintels Kotten.
► Mon 30: Nude hike in eastern Münsterland [30 April 2018]
At the start of the hike around 11 o'clock the thermometer still displayed 14°C, predicted 17°C were finally reached around 3 pm. In addition, however, there was a strong wind with gusts of up to 50 km/h. Since this combination would not have been so much fun even dressed, we used the opportunity, that Birgit and Thomas spontaneously invited to card games in their mobile home.
So, we had fun and a nice time together, which we ended with a stop in Telgte. The host of the restaurant Alter Gasthof Seiling [en: Old Inn Seiling] was kind enough, to welcome us as guests and serve food and drinks shortly before the kitchen closed at 2:30 pm. For dessert, we had coffee specialities and fruitcake at Marktcafé [en: Market Café].

It began in Austria at the NEWT 2017, the “Naked European Walking Tour” founded by Richard Foley, which takes place every year in the Austrian Alps. Among the 48 participants from 10 different nations of 3 continents were also some US boys. Very soon, old acquaintances from the NEWT 2014 were refreshed again, and new friendships were established. Milt renewed his former invitation from 2014, to visit him in Florida at the naturist resort Sunsport Gardens.
Without much thought, we spontaneously accepted the freshly produced invitation and did not worry about, what we would expect there to be and how long the visit should last. Finally, we spent four weeks at – compared with our western European experience – very warm summer-alike temperatures of up to 35°C / 95°F under a cloudless, blue winter sky above Florida. We spent a beautiful, unforgettable time on the naturist site Sunsport Gardens in Loxahatchee near West Palm Beach and by excursions in the area. Sunsport Gardens was founded in 1965 by a German naturist, Hugo Förster / Forester. Today, Morley Schloss continues his heritage.
Of course, there was a challenge. We were asked to report on “Nude life” in Germany and some European countries. On the one hand, this involved some preparatory work, but, on the other hand, it gave us the opportunity to bring European naturist life closer to USA and Canadian friends. We prepaed our report on nude hiking and biking in many regions of Germany and other European countries.
We couldn't let the matter rest, because during an annual event in the Harz Mountains, bodypainting is always on schedule. And in August 2017, we did a stunning nude body-art performance in the harbour of Münster (Westf.). Consequently, this led to a second workshop on “Nude art in the world”. In doing so, we did not confine ourselves to Europe, but looked e.g. also to Brazil and the USA.
During this time, the “Midwinter Naturist Festival February 15-20, 2018” took place there. Official comment on the website of Sunsport Gardens: »The Midwinter Naturist Festival was a great success. We had a record number of attendees and over 290 activities. All 6 days had perfect weather.«. During several days, workshops were on schedule from 7 am until midnight, partly up to six in parallel at various locations of the terrain. The workshops covered quite different and various subjects, i.e.:
- A Course in Miracles: Mind, Body, Integration, Purification, Wholeness
- Amateur Radio Demonstration & SIG Meeting
- Basic Digital Photography
We were invited to participate in workshops and to present our workshops. Result: Naturists from the USA and Canada deeply impressed due to the amazingly free nude life without real problems in various European countries. Even more astonished were some, when we explained to them, that we grew up in Germany with the ever-heard message, that the USA were the home of freedom, free speech, and free choice of lifestyle – therefore being a dream of life for some people in Europe. Now, some people in the Americas may partly dream of even more freedom of lifestyle in Europe.
Several trips took us to the clothing optional beaches Blind Creek Beach and Haulover Beach, to Palm Beach (place of yearn for those, who must show the world at all costs how much money they can spend, and place of domicile of Donald Trump), to Miami Beach (Art Deco architecture), several times to the Everglades, to the Loggerhead Marine Live Center, which is on duty of charity for the rescue of injured sea turtles, and to a Seminole Reservation.
In the Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach, an art exhibition did really impress us Washed Ashore: We Create Art to Save the Sea!: Hopefully, this will cause some people to think about the "madness of plastic" and maybe change own behaviour. The motto of washashore.org, "We hope, that someday we cannot continue to do this art anymore, because we will run out of this material!", is a call worth of consideration.
Also, a paddling tour on the Fisheating creek in six kajaks for one person each, was very impressive: Little alligators were around us from the beginning. Though, we were travelling in their homeland. At lunchtime, we were looking for a rest: We were just paddling around a bend, when a larger one lying in the sun looked at us and slipped into the water. The friends estimated its length to 15 feet (about 4.60 m). Right here, we got out for our lunch. The animal watched us awhile and then swam its way. When we visited the Grassy Waters, we learned, that alligators are naturally shy and withdraw themselves from people. Only, when they are fed, they do loose their dread and become a danger to humans. Therefore, it is forbidden to feed alligators. Violators are prosecuted by the police and punished, fed alligators must be hunted and killed. During a visit to a Seminole Reservation, we learned that crocodiles in contrast are very aggressive by nature.
Oh yes: we also did a few nude hikes. However, because of the legal situation in the USA, our friends paid always heed to get ourselves covered in good time ("Cover up!"), when we were to encounter other people wearing textiles.

Piz Macun rises high above the valleys. A secret place with 23 glacial lakes. The glacier is hidden under huge masses of basement. And for as long as there have been people here, they have told each other the saga of Dragun, the dragon, who sleeps here under the ice in a secret cave. What does he look like? No one has seen him until …
There, he appears, he approaches a woman. Don't worry, dragons have a good soul.
She is not afraid. Soon, he is carrying her heavy bag. Together, they set off on the long descent into the valley.
“Aren't you cold?” she asks him. “Why? I have fire in my blood!” When I feel like it, I melt some ice in my cave. Down on Zeznina, he wants to go back, but she wants him to keep coming, all the way to the alp, please. Dragons are shy, don't want to be seen. Dragons are curious. There is not a soul on the alp either. He quickly empties her bag onto the ground, looks at everything and goes back to Macun in the sun, pondering. In the evening he disappears into his cave.
I can still hear him. Breathing heavily after his climb through the shadow valley, he lies exhausted in his cave, boulders of amphibolite everywhere. Colour grey to grey-green, greenish-black he reads in his little book as he breathes some fire. Density 2.75 to 3.15, it says. The main constituents are hornblende and plagioclase feldspar, it continues. Biotite, chlorite, garnets, epidote. That sounds dangerous. Amphibolite has great strength and is weather-resistant. That reassures Dragun, and it will probably also be fireproof. But he lacks the strength to try it out. He prefers to sleep until summer comes again. It was pleasant to hike with him.
He lives on the Lais d' Immez under the glacier. But: Please don't tell anyone!

A · Participant's report about a nude hike and an encounter with police during NEWT 2016 [20 January 2018]
Roberto reports about a day of nude hiking in the Alps and a relaxed encounter with Austrian police.
22 international participants of the NEWT (Naked European Walking Tour) drove by car from their shared accommodation, an old farmhouse in Pongau, a region of the Salzburger Land, on Sunday, 10 July 2016, to the starting point of their first joint mountain hike in the buff to Weng-Goldegg. The cars neatly lined up, they parked there their 5 cars from Italy, Germany, and France for a few hours at the side of a road. And very decent, but lightly clothed according to the sunny weather, the hikers stood around in small groups and studied their hiking maps.
This first tour was supposed to be easy, yet we expected already a lot. We hiked through the village 'Enkerbichl', where a young woman in the garden of the house No. 14 practised fast alpine music on concertina. We continued our hike always uphill into the sun drenched 'Weng' forest.
Finally, we were able to pack away our last clothes and continue to hike uphill with naturst verve.
Somewhere above the dense edge of the forest, most of the participants needed a longer break. So we rested on an alpine meadow, between boulders and alpine flowers, in the shade of a group of trees.
Also, we enjoyed the already fantastic view to the south – the Tauern Mountains were in front of us in its full splendour.
According to plan, we wanted to hike along the alpine path through upper pastures towards Schneebergkreuz Mountain (1938 m), with the intermediate peaks Gamskögerl (1746 m) and Hochegg (1817 m). But we realised soon, that we had to take care not to overdo hiking further uphill at this first day. We had to recognise, that the planned route was not possible today for our large group.
So we chose a way back, which past a country homestead at the wayside. The wooden building was locked, it seemed empty. A few friendly cattle threw a glance after us.
In the meantime, our hiking group had been significantly pulled apart: everyone enjoyed this wonderful Sunday individually.
Maybe because I was tempted to take pictures of every second Alpine flower in this varied nature, I was suddenly the last along with a British hiking friend, who had the task to take care, that none of uns would get lost. Quite a good idea because of large number of persons and languages, and because some of them had no experience in hiking through the Alps.
Anyway, my slowness proved to be an advantage for the moment, when just two police officers were approaching us:
“Stop, police, stop – what are you doing here?”
Well, my companion did not understand a single word of German, let alone the local dialect in the Pongau area. So, I served the two officers my way:
“He is from England and does not understand German at all. We are naturists, we hike in the nude. We are a group of about 25 people from several countries. We are here together for a week to hike in the Alps. Here, where you live, it is so beautiful! Because we cannot make to hike up to the summit today, we are now on our way back to our cars.”
“So, these are your cars down in Goldegg?”
“And your are going to hike naked to the cars?”
“No, we don't do that, when we arrive at villages, we get dressed a little.”
“Then your're lucky, otherwise, we would have to take you all to the police station! Who is the leader of the group?”
“His name is Richard Foley, he is also an Englishman. Certainly, he is already hiking a kilometer further ahead.”
“Where are you all accommodated?”
“We rented a big house, at Dienten near Hochkönig Mountain.”
“Where exactly? … Oh yes, We know it. […] How do you all make it to gather for such an event?”
“Today, that's quite simple: via Internet → www.naktiv.net”
“The owner of the property up there called us by phone. He was worried, because you are all naked. Of course, we have to to drive here and assure ourselves what's going on.”
“Sure, no problem.”
“So, have a nice holiday!”
“Thank you very much!”
Great, I thought, just a pity, that my companion did not understand a word…
Now, to close the gap between the group, the forest path down to the group was not entirely safe for me as a barefoot hiker. But my wish to talk and inform the other hikers of the “Have a nice holiday!” by the police was reason enough to hike as fast as I could.
However, this was easier than expected: A "cold shower" by means of a small waterfall, just as if been ordered in advance. Some of us jumped around like happy little children.
Much earlier than scheduled, but fairly satisfied, we finished our first day of hiking in our community centre with a fantastic dinner prepared by some NEWT participants, who were burning to cook. That beautiful, a nude holiday can be!
